ABA’s Compton Cobras Grieve Tragic Loss of Powerful Point Guard!

By Compton Cobras on January 6, 2010

Compton, California (January 6, 2010) - The ABA’s 12th-ranked Compton Cobras today announced the loss of one of their most promising players, 27-year-old Point Guard Diamond “DJ” Johnson, who lost his life Sunday afternoon. A Los Angeles native, Johnson was known on-the-court for his “nothing but net” perimeter jumpers and aggressive post hustles. Off-the-court, Johnson was both the team’s jokester as well as veteran mentor, who took it upon himself to instruct many of his teammates. The all-around athlete practically grew up on the West and South Los Angeles basketball courts, where he played for various youth and young adult teams until he joined the ABA’s Fresno Heatwave in 2008.

As a Heatwave, Johnson’s tremendous attack at both ends of the post and inspirational leadership skills earned him the team’s MVP award. He joined the Cobras at the beginning of this season, where he often started and averaged 10 points a game. “This is an extremely tragic and unexpected loss. My heart goes out to DJ’s family, especially his children,” says Compton Cobras owner Tyrone Rodgers. “DJ was the kind of veteran player that I admired. He was humble and knew how to teach, motivate and bring out the best in his teammates,” adds Rodgers. He, along with Head Coach Ralph Lawson, has created a close-knit squad of dedicated and dynamic players now having to cope with the sudden loss of a vibrant teammate.

P1020126“DJ was the life of the team,” adds Head Coach Ralph Lawson. “He led our team in prayer before every game. DJ and I were extremely close and spoke on the phone two or three times a week. I’m really going to miss him,” Lawson reflects. Johnson leaves behind; his mother, Lynn Johnson, brother, Clifford Burley, sister, Cherisse Burley, son Dominic and daughter Emma. The Cobras will celebrate the life of Johnson during this Thursday night’s home game against the San Diego Surf. The 7:30 p.m. rematch against the San Diego Surf is a highly-anticipated competition. In the two ABA teams’ previous contest, the Cobras made a miraculous 101-91 comeback victory on the Surf’s turf.

Following the home game, fans have the opportunity to interact with all ABA players. Affordable game tickets ($12 general admission, $8 students w/ID, seniors and military, $5 for ages 12 and under) make it possible for the whole family to enjoy skilled athletes go for high hoops. Home games take place at El Camino College Compton Center Main Gym (Ice Box), 1111 E. Artesia Blvd. in Compton, Calif.
