Compton, California (December 2, 2009) – Friendly crosstown rivals, the Compton Cobras and LA SLAM faced-off for part one of what’s expected to be a hard-fought, two-game season opener. The LA SLAM’s home venue, Grant High School in Valley Glen was the site for the Tuesday night-tip-off. Although the Cobras led for the majority of the game, the final four minutes became a nail biter as the two teams exchanged 3 point shots , concluding with LA SLAM acing the high-scoring game and winning the first match-up 131-129.

Following the tip-off, the two teams went at the ball with speed, b-ball agility and madcap “nothing-but-net” shooting. When the dust settled, Compton Cobras’ mighty Forward Isaac “Ice” Burton led the half with 19 points. Cobras Center Marcel “Big Poppa” Jackson came off the bench as a towering inferno that nearly shut down the post, and was second in scoring for the half with 13 points. The LA SLAM’s Small Forward Jushay Rockett led his team the first half with 15 points, while his teammate Small Forward Dion Marcus also helped contribute to the team’s first half points. The Cobras led the first half 67-56.

The second half of the game proved to be just as intense, quick and exciting. He finished the game as Cobras leading scorer with 33 points and 2 assists. The Cobras’ other leading scorer for the night was the swift Forward Tracie Cathay, who scored an impressionable 12 points in the first half. Cathay then went into overdrive and floored to the post deep in the second, gaining an additional 16 points for 28 total points.

With back-to-back scoring and both teams trading leads in the third quarter, the scoreboard had reached triple digits with the LA SLAM leading the Cobras’ 100-96 by the quarter’s end. The LA SLAM’s Small Forward Rockett continued his post penetration with 15 more points during the second half and led his team in scoring with 30 total game points. His teammate and standout, Small Forward ,Dion Marcus scored all his points in the second half – when it mattered the most – earning 26 points.
